Planting Pakistan out of harm's way

It is no secret that Pakistan is in the grips of a terrible turmoil that threatens to shake the very foundations it stands on. With the devastating combination of political, energy and food crises occurring in the same instance, where should one turn to turn the tides of such terrible storms?

Promoting long-term wellness

Cover Story
Renewing food, energy and hope

Too much reliance has been placed on expendable means to any form of basic living needs. With the advent of rapacious needs to compete in global economies, businesses have flagrantly introduced pesticides and fertilizers, as well as repeatedly farmed on fertile soil that is now turning into dust. Similarly, reckless addiction to fossil fuels and carbon-based fuels as a primary energy source has lead to a rapid pollution of our skies, water and lands.
Biodiversity

Herbal wealth of Pakistan is in peril

I refrain from calling the potential of herbs innumerous because they have never been measured. Sporadic accounts in seminars and academic gatherings recount them cursorily and the issue is forgotten.

Climate Change
Climate Change to bring Massive Storm Floods

Asia's massive delta cities have most to fear from catastrophic storm floods driven by climate change, according to an OECD report. As many as 150 million people in the world's big coastal cities are likely to be at risk from flooding by the 2070s, more than three times as many as now. Of 136 port cities assessed around the world for their exposure to once-in-a-century coastal flooding, 38 percent are in Asia and27 percent are located in deltas, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) stated.
Environement Watch

A green Islamabad in three years?

It has been a decade since the passage of the Pakistan Environmental Protections Act, 1997. Yet there is a complete and fundamental misunderstanding of the spirit, purpose and effect of such a law. Indeed, every time someone speaks of a "cleaner environment" they almost invariably bring up the topic of trees or something equally trivial, not realizing that there are far more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt up in their philosophy.

Interview

“I'm never angry in life about anything,
I just go there and hit the ball really hard.
It's a big stress reliever for me.”

Anoosha Aslam claimed the 2007 National Clay Court Title. Young, ambitious, determined, tenacious and focused are the few words that came to me while interviewing her.

Sunbathing done right!

Many experts link sun exposure to premature wrinkles, cataracts, and skin cancer. To prevent these problems, some recommend avoiding the sun as much as possible and putting on sunscreen whenever you go out, even if you're only going out for a few minutes. But research shows that sun exposure does not always have a dark side.
