Cover Story

Ancient homesteads

On most maps of Pakistan, the region lying between Besham on the West and Naran on the east, appears as a complete blank and, until the devastating earthquake in October 2005, the remote Alai valley, nestled in its protective cocoon of towering mountains, remained largely unknown, unmapped and unexplored in 'modern' times.

Cover Story

Hubble bubble

First in to the smoke blackened pot was a huge chunk of ghee, stirred around with the end of a freshly peeled pine branch until it spit and sizzled in a frenzy: next, a heap of chopped wild onions, gathered from the slopes of an adjacent mountain where we had gone to laugh at the hilarious pantomime performed by an extended family of marmosets on the previous afternoon.

Phet strikes and misses

Our coastlines are defenseless in this regard, especially the Karachi coastline that lies below the sea level. Mitigation strategies are a crucial missing link that may ensure safety for our citizens in the longer term.

Oil Spill

BP’s coverup

The recent oil well leak by British Petroleum, spilling a large amount of poison into the Gulf Coast points to the over dependence on fossil fuels and related dangers. The oil industry has to be more responsible and up front about having no proper means to control these possible environmental disasters, rather than pretend that the oil installations are completely fool proof.
