Pakistan Women’s Tennis Championship 2007 starts on Feb 15

  • Subh-e-Nau (SN) is a not-for-profit organization working for the promotion of Tennis in Pakistan with dozens of successful national and international events to its credit. The events organized so far not only promoted a healthy sports activity in the country but also helped emerging a lot of new talent, which is unarguably an asset for the country.
  • SN is one of the pioneering environmental and PH advocacy and awareness organization with many ground breaking projects in the country, and with international collaborations in many fields.
  • With an unparalleled 16 year sports promotion record, Subh-e-Nau is now hosting the most prestigious event in the history of women’s tennis in the country.
  • The event will serve as a run up to the Subh-e-Nau International Women’s Championships 2007, which will feature international players from around the globe. Earlier in 2004, we also brought the men’s professional Circuit to Pakistan.
  • The activity aims at:
    • Providing girls with a chance to compete in international level tennis, being exposed to the best talent in the country,
    • women development, and
    • to raise awareness about the dire environmental conditions confronting Pakistan
  • Sport is essential for the physical and mental development of our nation’s daughters, sisters and would be mothers. Needless to mention exclusive women’s events are rare.
  • Also this tournament will incorporate an on site outdoor campaign for raising awareness on the importance of forest cover for Pakistan, while a plantation campaign will coincide with the event.
  • The event would be held from February 15 to 18 at Islamabad Club Courts.
  • It will be an open championship with four event categories: Ladies Open, Girls’ Under-15, Ladies doubles and Veterans singles (35 and above).
  • Prize purse for this tournament is Rs 200, 000, which would be disbursed in accordance with International Tennis Federation’s formula. We have adopted this practice in this and our other tournaments to maximize the benefits of the tournament to the participants.
  • This sports event will also coincide with our plantation and awareness raising campaign this year, so it should not be seen as an isolated event. It is meant to promote awareness of dangers of global warming which threatens our very existence, and plantation of indigenous trees as the foremost solution to it. There are examples of places where effects of global warming have been combated through plantation of thick forest cover.
  • We aim at educating both participants, people attending this championship and the general population about this environmental issue that threatens not only us but effects our present and coming generations. What is needed now is a ‘revolution’ and not half hearted efforts at addressing environmental issues.
  • Taking both these themes of work together for promoting a well aware healthy society, we invite women players of all ages to come and participate in the tournament. Our effort is to facilitate them as far as possible. We invite schools, colleges, universities to send their players to this prestigious tournament, so that they are exposed to the best level of tennis in the country.
  • Traditionally national events have had only ladies and U-18 events. In this tournament, for promoting younger girls, we have incorporated the U-15 event. With this innovating approach, we aim at increasing the pool of young girls taking up the sport.
