Aqeel, Sara clinch the clay court titles Islamabad-28 December 2008:- Aqeel Khan registered another title in his name when he beat Asim Shafique in Men’s Singles event of the Subh-e-Nau National Clay Court Tennis Championship 2008 here at PTF complex on Sunday. Aqeel clinched decider by 6-2 6and 6-4. In ladies singles event, top seed Sara Mahboob proved to be too good for Ushna Sohail to beat her in the final. Ushna presented marvelous tennis, however, not enough to beat Sara. Sara won this match by 7-5 and 6-4 Heera Ashiq was unfortunate against excited M. Waqas Malik when he was down to him in the final of Boys’ Under 17 category. Waqas played aggressively and clinched the thriller with title by 6-7, 6-3 and 7-5. Federal Minister for Environment Mr. Hameedullah Jan Afridi distributed the prizes among the winners after Ladies Singles final. Beside shields, players were rewarded with Two hundred and twenty thousand rupees. To appreciate the ladies’ enthusiasm, organizers raised prize money of ladies winner and runner up players from 25 thousand to 40 thousand. Runner-up player of the U-17, Heera Ashiq was rewarded with rupees 5 thousand for his great performance throughout the event. Speaking on the occasion, Federal Minister for Environment Hameedullah Jan Afridi hailed the efforts of Subh-e-Nau and said that sports activities were essential part of our youths’ positive mental growth. |
